ok, i need to finally get it down officially.  i'm known for having not only a favorite movie, but having a ranking of my favorites.  my friends, however, say that i'm constantly changing the rankings around to suit the conversation.  not so anymore.  this is it.  this is the official list of my all time favorite movies (this way i can just change it around whenever and it still LOOKS like it's set in stone).  somebody tell me if they prefer number one first or a sort of countdown thing so you don't know what number one is right when you open the page.

# one:

flash gordon

a pretty ok flash gordon site

i showed a friend of mine this movie once and she didn't tell me she hated it, she just told me she could see why this was my favorite movie.  although flash gordon is my favorite movie ever i don't really tell people they have to see it because it's so good.  i think most people honestly feel that it's actually pretty lame.  nevertheless, it's something that i alone think is really cool.  the first few times i saw it i thought it was fun because it was so cheesy.  later i realized that the makers of the movie made it that way on purpose.  when i started noticing more lines i didn't notice before i thought, hey it's a comedy after-all.  besides that, it's the ultimate escape from reality.  a lot of people watch movies and complain about how unreal it is.  i don't with this movie.  i always think why can't we live in a universe this silly?
it used to be that my three favorite movies were the three big star wars movies.  i've really let go of star wars especially in light of the most recent one.  i've held on to the empire strikes back because i feel that it's a movie that really stands alone apart from the rest of the others.  the intensity, drama and even humor far overshadow the other star wars movies and make this one an actual good movie even out of context.   # two

amadeus is probably my highest rated movie that was almost universally favored by the critics.  usually the serious period piece type stuff the critics usually get into i don't like.  usually i find something small about those kinds of movies that makes me dislike the whole thing.  i feel i'm justified in being picky since critically acclaimed period pieces seem to hold themselves up so high.  i haven't found anything wrong with amadeus though, and i find it far more involving than any other movie of its type.  the brooding of salieri is wonderfully haunting.  and then there's the music... ahhh, of course there's the music.  beautiful. # three

some kind

of wonderful

i'm a total sucker for teen-movies. as a kid i couldn't wait to be a teen-ager so i could experience such drama. john hughes and howard deutch did a great job pretty much remaking another movie they made together the previous year, pretty in pink. in this movie the love triangle is the same, but the sexes are reversed. it also has the added bonus of hardy jenns, about the only teen jerk who pulls it off without being corny.
there is something wrong with the frame rate of this movie. i don't know exactly what it is but there's something that affects my eyes that makes them water the instant we hear the voice-overs of everyone in bedford falls praying for george bailey. as a result, this movie makes the distinction of being the only movie that makes me cry. for anybody who has caught some or most of it on tv every year- do yourself a favor and rent it and watch it start to finish. it's a movie that you need to be pulled into completely to get the effect. btw, did anyone see the saturday night live where they showed the "lost ending" of it's a wonderful life ? whoa. hilarious. # five
